MFR-SRC Soldering System

Cartridge heater technology provides soldering and rework performance to suit even the most demanding SMT removal and placement applications. The cartridges provide fast thermal performance and respond quickly to the load demands. A small shaft diameter provides access to tightly cramped rework areas and enables the most difficult operations to be performed effortlessly. MFR-PTZ Tweezer/Soldering System

The Precision Tweezer has been ergonomically designed to be lightweight and easy to use for removing even the smallest of discrete components, such as 0201 packages. The Precision Tweezer has a double sided pivot for "true tweezer" action and a dual position pitch adjustment to help the operator target the component. Designed to be a compact, lead-free compatible soldering iron, the OKI/Metcal PS-800E High Power Soldering Station features an innovative, compact power supply with a small footprint ideal for toolboxes or lean workbenches. The PS-800E allows for higher thermal performance required by lead-free solder alloys without increasing the tip temperature. Also available is the PS-800 Soldering System which is ideal for light-medium loads and uses a series of fine and small diameter tips. Both the PS-800E and PS-800 use replaceable heater sleeve/tips rather than cartridges, with the cost being comparable to conventional tips, making cost of ownership low. The unique two-piece design separates the induction coil from the heater tip. The long-life induction coil remains in the handle, while fast heat-up (within 10-15 sec) tips are easily removed and replaced, without the use of set screws or locking nuts. The PS-800 Series combines the power and superior process control advantages of SmartHeat, with the system quality and innovative design of OK International/Metcal irons, and require no calibration. Now comes with Auto Sleep Workstand for improved tip life.

Metcal MX-500 Series of Soldering, Desoldering & Rework Systems

Metcal's MX-500 Series of Soldering, Desoldering & Rework Systems are the benchmark against which other competitive systems are measured. Unlike conventional soldering/rework systems that rely on stored energy, the MX-500 series uses SmartHeat for direct power on demand, and handles both SMT and through-hole soldering/rework with one power supply at the bench. This new pre-heater targets heat for improved speed and efficiency for high thermal demand applications, including lead-free. Used for SMT and through-hole hand processes, the PCT-100 uses convection air heating to heat a PCB first, for better soldering and safer rework. The PCT-100 adds heat volume, without turning up the temperature, to perform soldering/repair tasks at the appropriate peak temperature without distorting the board. Ideal for thick, heat sinking boards with heavy mass, the pre-heater focuses and delivers hot air where you need it. When finished, the fan continues without heat to cool down the board. The system is easy-to-use. Simply plug it in, turn it on, adjust the heat and it's ready for work. The PCT-100 can be used with or without a board holder. An Arm Rest is also available to steady your hand and keep your arm from being fatigued. OK International HCT-900 Hand Held, Self-Contained Convection Tool

The HCT-900 Hot Air Tool offers a low cost, versatile rework solution for a wide variety of rework application challenges. It has a simple, compact robust design comprised of analog controls for both airflow and heat. A closed loop feedback circuit controls the temperature allowing the desired temperature to be achieved and maintained regardless of changes in the volume of airflow. The HCT-900 can be used for the removal/unsoldering and refitting of electronic components, and is also effective at reworking pin in-hole devices such as sockets and connectors. It can be used as a portable heat gun for heat shrink tubing applications and can remove printed wiring board conformal coatings by overcuring epoxy coatings and softening urethanes using precisely controlled temperature. Using it with solder braid and flux is a fast and efficient way to remove solder shorts and splashes. The unique low noise air pump provides precise airflow control for the most demanding applications. The “power off” cool down function retains airflow through the hand piece while the unit powers down, providing efficient heater cooling and reducing thermal stress. The HCT-900 is fully ESD compliant.

The OK International/Metcal BVX-101 is a powerful, yet  low noise unit that needs no external ducting or compressor. Simply move the lightweight system from station to station, plug it in and switch it on for instant fume extraction. Just 11" tall, with a 12" x 9" plenum chamber, the unit easily fits on any bench-top or, when space is at a premium, take advantage of the under-bench mounting bracket. Rated at 85-Watts, the system delivers high quality filtration without compromise. OK International BVX-200 Series Two-Station Fume Extraction Systems

The BVX-200 Series Fume Extraction Systems are two-arm units that combine powerful fan performance with efficient filtration, quiet operation and complete portability. They can be placed under or next to the bench-top and fitted with either two 50mm (2") diameter BVX arms or one 63mm (2.5") diameter Omniflex arm. The BVX-201 Fume Extraction System is designed mainly for solder fumes and incorporates both pre- and main-filters which can be changed independently to maximize the working life of each filter and lower the total cost of ownership. The main filter has a HEPA efficiency of 99.97% at 0.3 micron, plus an activated carbon filter to remove additional gases. OK International's new multi-user MFX-2200C Fume Extraction System provides the ultimate performance in a compact size that easily fits under most workbenches. It is ideal for removing solder fumes and filtering laser fumes. The lid features 4 air inlet ports for connection to Omniflex arms. By using a hose splitter in conjunction with BVX arms, the number of connected arms can be doubled. The unit sets a new benchmark in performance, delivering a maximum airflow of 900 m3/h and a maximum suction force of 1,075Pa. Designed for general electronics applications, the MFX-2200C features Pre-Filter, HEPA (99.97% efficient @ 0.3µm) and Gas Filter. The APR-5000-XLS Array Package Rework System performs precise, cost effective rework of the widest range of PCBs and component types, from large boards up to 24.5" x 24.5" to components down to 0.020" x 0.010". The flexible APR-5000-XLS System incorporates dual stage pre-heaters and has the thermal capacity and control to execute precise profiles of both large and small PCBs, delivering uniform temperature control horizontally, across the surface of PCBs up to 0.25" (6.35mm) thick, and vertically between the die and ball of the reworked component. Motorized X, Y, Z adjustments speed placement and help ensure process repeatability. In addition, motorized Theta axis provides 360° rotation to simplify component orientation. SmartHeat® Technology: the Metcal/OK International Difference

In Military Depot environments, a single component can cost thousands of dollars, a circuit card 10 times that, and older electronic modules may be priceless because they are no longer manufactured! Metcal prevents inadvertent damage due to improper repair/rework techniques, improves product quality, increases productivity and reduces repair costs with its patented SmartHeat technology. As SmartHeat maintains a constant tip temperature, automatically delivering the exact amount of power required for the task, consistent results are guaranteed and component/PCB damage is virtually eliminated. Unlike conventional soldering/desoldering irons, SmartHeat does not require calibration & virtually eliminates the risk of thermal overshoot/undershoot.

SmartHeat® Delivers Direct Power
First & foremost, the success of a conduction soldering iron depends upon the availability and controlled flow of thermal energy into the connection during the two critical phases - flux activation and intermetallic bond formation. Conventional ceramic or wire-wound heaters attempt to control this process by managing indirect parameters, such as idle tip temperature. In contrast, SmartHeat administers heat directly from the heater to the joint. Metcal tip cartridges detect the thermal load and instantly adjust the power in order to deliver the right amount of heat precisely where it is needed. If the soldering iron tip cools while transferring heat to a joint, SmartHeat immediately responds by safely increasing the power to maintain a constant tip temperature. As a result, electronic workers are relieved of regulating the tip temperature, thus eliminating the risk of thermal damage to the component or to the PCB.

Trouble-Free Tip Replacement
The heat-resistant pad supplied with the unit allows you to easily insert and remove the soldering iron tip cartridge or desoldering tip, within 3 seconds! The swiftness and simplicity of this process ensures there is no loss of productivity, no need for additional tools and no reason for two soldering systems to be heating at the same time.

No Calibration Required!
To meet the demands of temperature stability, conventional ceramic, wire-wound and tip-cartridge heater systems depend on the sensor, heater and operator set point controls. Each of these elements is subject to drift and instability requiring frequent calibration to ensure compliance. By contrast, the repeatability of Metcal SmartHeat Technology is inherently determined by the molecular properties of the heater material and does not shift over time, ensuring long term stability without the need for calibration. As the heater’s alloy dictates the temperature, calibration is not required. Indeed, there are no dials, buttons, digital displays or calibration tools, typical of other systems, with which you can adjust SmartHeat’s temperature. SmartHeat soldering systems comprise three basic elements: a high frequency power supply, a tip cartridge and a hand-piece. The cartridge contains the solder tip, a heater and the wire coil. the temperature of the heater (a copper bar coated with a magnetized iron/nickel alloy) reaches a certain level (its Curie Point), it stops absorbing energy and the temperature becomes constant. Energy from the power supply feeds a steady current to the coil. This creates an electrical field from which the heater absorbs energy, turns it into heat and transfers it to the iron/nickel alloy. When soldering has drawn heat from the heater to the extent that the tip begins to cool, the alloy reacts by taking on more energy in order to reheat the tip. In this way, SmartHeat self-regulates the tip temperature to within ±1.1ºC of a set point regardless of thermal load & without any need for adjustment.
